When you look at the current condition of the United Sates economy, it won’t take you long to figure out that it’s seen better days. The economic hardships that the country is currently undergoing influence each state, county, and city within, down to even the smallest communities.

These effects stretch far beyond the dip in the average weekly paycheck. American towns, much like the well-known Jacksonville, Florida, are also seeing increases in violence, unemployment, and overall community morale. A logical place to start the journey in eradicating these issues would be the healthcare industry, especially considering it has been named the fastest growing industry in today’s economy. In simpler terms, healthcare is the gold-mine of the average 21st-century American community.

One man has certainly been doing his part to improve his community, and his name is Dr. Albert Chester. There’s been a lot of buzz, lately, surrounding that name, and the name of the institute that has recently launched in the Jacksonville community, The Capstone Institute. The Capstone Institute is a pharmacy tech school that, according to Dr. Chester, doesn’t only strive to train students to become employed as pharmacy technicians, they strive to develop future leaders that will affect positive change in the community. In his eyes, any university or tech school can train someone to be a decent employee, but it takes special care and passionto train someone to be a leader that thinks outside of the box, inspires change, and pushes their community into a positive direction…the latter is the type of experience that The Capstone Institute aims to provide.

What better time to launch such an inspiring project than right now, when the community is a low point, alongside many other American communities? Lieutenant Colonel Ricky L. Pope, USA (Retired), seems to believe that there is no better time. He recently stated: “The Capstone Institute is another ember on the fire of progress within the community. We must continually support such ventures so that the fire will grow stronger”. Dr. Chester agrees because from what he has seen throughout the first session of The Capstone Institute, the community is already responding well to the education and support that the institution is offering.

It is worthy to be noted that all demographics within the community are being affected in a positive way by this new institution, as well as the new way of thinking that it has brought to the citizens of the Jacksonville community. The first class at The Capstone Institute consisted of individuals aged 22 to 56. This is just one of the many indications that The Capstone Institute is sparking inspiration and interest of members of the community across all generations. This is a good thing, considering it will take the wisdom of the older generations in combination with the energy and passion of the younger generations to not simply inspire, but establish in the Jacksonville community and surrounding areas.

Speaking of which, Dr. Chester has proudly announced that he does plan to expand this program outside of the area in which it currently resides. “In 2018”, he says, “we are looking to expand further into Jacksonville, Florida, as well as branch off to other main cities in the state and southeast region.”. It is a refreshing thought for many Americans that an institution with such high aspirations and community support may be coming to a city near their own in the upcoming years. It is the responsibility of the community, within Jacksonville as well as hundreds of miles away, to ensure that this institution, along with the many others that are popping up around the country with similar values, can expand and inspire every individual that is within their capabilities. As the founder himself, Dr. Albert Chester, has said: “The opportunity to change the community must come from within the community.”.

If you feel the need to support, or even get more information on, The Capstone Institute, as well as the difference they are making in the lives of their students and sponsors, you’re invited to visit www.thecapstoneinstitute.org or visit The Capstone Institute locally at 3416 Moncrief Road, Suite 101, Jacksonville, Florida 32209. If neither of these contact options are  suitable for you, then you may also contact the institute through email at albertdchester2@yahoo.com or by phone at (904)-993-1800. We encourage you to support this organization, and we also encourage you to inspire change in your community, however you deem possible.

The Capstone Institute: Changing Lives In Jacksonville Through Education https://www.florida.com/blog/the-capstone-institute-changing-lives-in-jacksonville/ https://www.florida.com/blog/the-capstone-institute-changing-lives-in-jacksonville/#respond Tue, 03 Jan 2017 21:13:55 +0000 http://www.florida.com/?p=1343

There’s good news coming in this new year to anyone in the Jacksonville, Florida area that’s looking to better themselves and continue their education. Albert Chester, a former student at Episcopal School of Jacksonville and Florida A&M University, as well as the current manager and pharmacist at the Walgreens in Jacksonville’s north side, will soon be known as the founder of the first pharmacy tech school located in the heart of the Northside. The Capstone Institute is a movement in the right direction, in the eyes of many in the community. “I think The Capstone Institute is another ember on the fire of progress within the community. We must continually support such ventures so that the fire will grow stronger,” said LT. Colonel Rickey Pope (ret.) USA. Albert is quite excited about the anticipation surrounding the project, and he’s looking forward to providing opportunities for a community that is so close to his heart, and so unfortunately deprived of similar options. In his own words: “I don’t think I would want it anywhere else because of the need here.”

So, what exactly will this pharmacy tech school offer the 30 new students that they’ll soon be accepting? The answer is simple. The students that choose to enroll in the brand-new Capstone Institute will be registered through the State of Florida, and eligible to take the state pharmacy certification test. If they keep up with all of the materials they’re given, the program should not only make them eligible for the test, but completely prepared for passing it, as well. Not only will they be studying from textbooks like the common college student, they will be receiving useful, hands-on training through the program too. The best part of this program, and probably the most promising as well, is not the materials or training that the students receive, but the fact that the students will have an opportunity to train through a complete, comprehensive program for less than $3,000, which is the cost of one semester through similar programs. The students can also rest easy knowing that they won’t have to wait a lifetime, or even years, to get out into the job force and start giving back to their community, as well as supporting themselves and their families. The entire program, up to the day they choose to take their certification test, is only 15 weeks.

The establishment of this new institute is a positive light in the Jacksonville community. Even the individuals who aren’t interested in attending the institute are excited about the new direction it will hopefully begin to lead the community in. “We are determined to help the determined succeed,” Chester stated. However, many members of the community are aware that The Capstone Institute will not only begin helping individuals succeed but the institute can also boost the local economy exponentially and provide a beacon of hope for those otherwise unsure about what they are going to do outside of their high school education.”The opportunity to change the community must come from within the community. The Capstone Institue is a life changing initiative,” said retired NFL star Drayton Florence.

Generating healthcare industry job opportunities is one of the greatest steps a community can take towards improvement for current and future generations. Especially, considering the healthcare industry is the fastest growing industry in today’s economy. With just one visit to the Capstone Institute’s website, you’ll find their refreshing and uplifting mission statement: “Capstone Institute looks to develop ethical, accountable, and inquisitive members of the healthcare industry.  This institute hopes to create a student-centered environment catering to the academic and professional needs of its pupils.  We seek to inspire a more purpose driven life in our students.”. Albert Chester and his great team of supporters should be proud to know that they are achieving those goals, exactly.

Saura Johnston’s Women’s Mimosa Club Mixes Fun With Networking In Jacksonville https://www.florida.com/blog/womens-mimosa-club/ https://www.florida.com/blog/womens-mimosa-club/#comments Tue, 15 Nov 2016 22:07:43 +0000 http://www.florida.com/?p=1226

Women’s Mimosa Club participants having a great time!
Alcohol, brunch, and women; a great recipe for quality social exchange. A young socialite in Jacksonville, Florida looked to mix those ingredients and out came the Women’s Mimosa Club. With experience hosting mixers in the past for business owners, Saura Johnston felt it was a natural progression. The interest she received from the first event made it clear there’s plenty of demand.

The events don’t usually need much explaining other than where, when, and the price of a ticket. You can almost see that satisfying ‘click’ of understanding in someone’s mind when they hear the name. Nate Watson, a Jacksonville native and boyfriend of the club’s creator, loves telling people about Saura’s creation. ‘When I tell people about the Women’s Mimosa Club, the response I usually get is ‘You had me at ‘mimosa’’ or ‘that’s a real thing!?’’’ With a name so precise, the club sells itself.

A great showing at Saura’s Women’s Mimosa Club.
Many who shy away from stuffy networking events find themselves at home at Saura’s events. These events are for fun, memorable connections. Business cards are placed into gift bags before each event so that attendees can focus on conversation instead of trading cards. Interactive games are hosted that ensure a good mix of connections. There is a speaker who shares some insight in their expertise. Food is provided by the local restaurant where the event is being held. The restaurant also provides what is, perhaps, the most important ingredient, bottomless mimosas.

Saura describes the club as something she’s had in the back of her mind for years. It seemed to simply come out of her this year as she saw a need for it. She plans to continue hosting these events in addition to many others. The next Women’s Mimosa Club event will be hosted at its originating location; HobNob in Jacksonville, Florida. From 9-11am on December 10th the attendees will mingle, munch, and meet like-minded women from all over the region in HobNob’s new event space.

Let’s get moving to Florida!

hidden-hillscourse1 Moving To Florida

1. You can play golf and wear shorts year round

Floridians like to joke about how 65 degrees is cold and warrants a heavy jacket and long pants. With over 700 natural springs in Florida, you can leave your swim trunks close by for a swim, scuba dive or underwater exploration. Keep some golf shorts close by so you can hit the links after your underwater exploration. Unlike up north, the golf courses in Florida stay open year round and the cost to play Florida golf courses are more affordable. One of the most beautiful golf courses in Northeast Florida is Hidden Hills Country Club. The Hidden Hills Country Club is so beautiful you may forget you are playing golf and want to simply enjoy the natural beauty of this Arnold Palmer Signature layout. “The course sometimes teases you to use a driver, but the better play is to keep it simple and just put the ball in position,” says Russ Libby, PGA Director of Golf. “From the championship tees, it’s a true tournament course. But as you work forward on the tees, it eases up a little bit and the average golfer will have access to a wide variety of shots.” While standing on the 10th tee box junior golfer Dominic Clayton said, “this golf course is just beautiful.” The golf Pro John Handley is a very friendly and the staff is super accommodating, another reason why Florida is the perfect place to relocate to. Ready to start moving to Florida?

2. The cost of living is much lower

A one bedroom apartment in Jacksonville rents for $904 a month on average and a two bedroom apartment rents for an average of $1112. A one bedroom apartment in Philadelphia rents for $1725 a month on average and a two bedroom apartment rents for an average of $2198. If your plan is to let your dollar stretch further consider moving to Florida. Boasting impressive beaches, world-class restaurants, fun nightclubs and more, no wonder tourists don’t want to go back home to their boring, expensive, beachless lives. You can spend your extra dollars on watching the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, or Tampa Bay Buccaneers play. Well if you are moving to Florida these are good reasons!

3. People in Florida are very polite and courteous

Moving To Florida

Forget the hustle and bustle of New York, Floridians enjoy taking in beautiful sights. The small things in life are much more appreciated in Florida, the breeze from the ocean, the sway of palm trees, the clouds that look like someone you know, Florida is absolutely astonishing. Southern hospitality is the unofficial law of the land. Being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Floridians can fall out of bed and go tanning, swimming, surfing, fishing, boating, or golfing. When a hectic work week mounts simply head out to the beach and release your stress, Floridians have a better quality of life due to the natural beauty of the state, and in turn are happier people. Moving to Florida has nice people and nice scenes. Don’t you think so?

4. Winter time feels like heaven

With an average temperature of 78 degrees for the winter months Florida is the perfect destination in the brutal Northern winter. If you are an outdoor person (like many of us are) not worrying about being snowed in is quite refreshing. The sand on the beach in the winter time is slightly cool to the touch, the sun rays lightly dance off the waves in the ocean and the Florida breeze is very refreshing. The weather is so nice in the winter time you can literally spend an entire day fishing and surfing. There is a reason Snowbirds vacation and eventually relocate to Florida in the winter months.

However, this is not the case” says Lonnell McCall a 20 year Navy veteran and golf enthusiast. “Brentwood Golf Course is home to many skill level golfers; it’s not unusual to see golfers that play professionally on the driving range, chipping area, or the putting green right next to you,” says Keith Granchamp a Brentwood Golf Course customer. Many Brentwood Golf Course veterans speak of golf legend Calvin Peete hitting balls on the driving range at Brentwood Golf Course, spending most of his time practicing his dazzling driving accuracy.

Why I Love Jacksonville (And You Should, Too!) https://www.florida.com/blog/why-i-love-jacksonville-and-you-should-too/ https://www.florida.com/blog/why-i-love-jacksonville-and-you-should-too/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2016 16:29:26 +0000 http://www.florida.com/?p=899 I Love Jacksonville

I have been living in Jacksonville Florida for a little over 2 years; I am one of thosesnowbirdsreferred to by many Florida natives. I originate from Philadelphia, Pa; the snow is a bitter friend who visits every year around the same time. I have shoveled the aftermath of many snow storms and blizzards in my life and in the winter of 2014 I had finally had enough.

shovel

I remember the first palm tree I drove past as I entered Northeast Florida. My family and I were so excited. We could not wait to visit our first Florida beach. After we settled in, we were amazed by the landscape and the natural beauty of Jacksonville. The streets were very clean; the skyline was filled with tall buildings and the St. Johns River was breathtaking. We settled in very well; my young daughter loved the fact that she could actually play outside during the winter months. My wife was also happy that there was a ton of things to do in Jacksonville. Up north when it’s cold, you don’t want to be outside. Beaches are ghost towns and your life exists inside, moving to Florida meant that we could enjoy outside all year round.

Our first time seeing the Jacksonville Jaguars play in the EverBank Field was truly amazing. The fans were similar to my beloved Philadelphia Eagles fans, and I too caught the Jaguar fever. Jacksonville has the largest concentration of veterans in the U.S. so finding local veterans organizations was extremely easy. I developed a love for golf thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project’s outreach coordinator Chris Dacy. Chris invited me to play in a veteran’s golf tournament in Jacksonville, and I fell in love with the sport. In Philadelphia, we don’t have access to many beaches, and the golf courses shut down for the winter months. The people in Jacksonville were very friendly and welcoming to my family. We soon developed long lasting relationships with friends who made us feel as if we were right at home.

I could not have found a better place to start my technology business (Tech From Vets). Jacksonville is filled with people that want to see the city grow into a technological metropolitan of the brightest minds and the most innovative businesses. “I love Jacksonville because it’s a friendly community. Additionally, I have seen the city constantly innovate and modernize to really create a vibrant and wonderful city,” said Brandon Sugar President of Sugar UnlimitedOne of my favorite places to eat is at Joe’s Crab Shack in Jacksonville Beach. I love eating seafood while feeling the breeze from the ocean. Every winter I send my extended family in Philadelphia pictures of my daughter on the beach having fun, I see it as a reminder of the enjoyment of living in Jacksonville. Having attended over 13 football games in Jacksonville, I have secretly converted into a Jaguars fan. I love the work that Shahid Khan is doing to revitalize the city. The Jacksonville Business Journal has also been very kind by featuring my business in their digital publication.

I love Jacksonville; I am proud to be a Floridian. I encourage everyone to vacation and visit Jacksonville Florida. I am sure that if you take my advice and visit Jacksonville you will fall in love with the city too.
